In a medium saucepan, combine the damsons, sugar, water, and cinnamon stick. Stir to combine.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer until the sugar has dissolved and the damsons have softened, about 10-15 minutes.
Remove the cinnamon stick and stir in the vanilla extract and lemon juice.
Let the compote cool to room temperature, then transfer to a serving dish or container and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serve the damson compote over yogurt, ice cream, or oatmeal, or as a topping for pancakes or waffles.
