As a culinary enthusiast, I’m always on the hunt for novel dishes to add to my repertoire. That’s why I was over the moon when I stumbled upon damson jelly. This delightful condiment is made from tiny, dark purple plums with a tangy taste that is slightly bitter. (Damson Plum Jam Taste)

These plums, which are commonly found in Europe and Asia, are ideal for creating jams, jellies, and other sweet spreads. (See Damson Plum Jam Recipe or all Damson Plum Recipes. You can even make Damson Plum Liqueur)

Damson Jam

I relish the process of making damson jelly as it’s a straightforward procedure that requires only a few simple ingredients. The most critical component, of course, is the plums, which I meticulously wash and de-stem before proceeding. Then, I mix the plums with sugar, lemon juice, and water in a pot and simmer the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Once the mixture reaches a rolling boil and simmers for about 20 minutes, the plums become soft and tender. (For a lower sugar version, see Low-Sugar Damson Jam Recipe)

After the plums have cooled, I strain the mixture through a sieve into a large bowl, pressing down on the solids to extract the maximum amount of juice. Depending on my preference, I may also add pectin to the strained juice according to the package instructions. Then, I pour the juice into sterilized jars and secure the lids tightly, storing them in the refrigerator for up to three months or the freezer for up to a year. The versatility of damson jelly is what I adore most about it. I love using it as a spread on toast, bagels, crackers, or as a topping for plant-based yogurt or ice cream. It also doubles as a fantastic glaze for vegetables or a sauce for desserts. The tangy and sweet flavor of damson jelly complements a wide range of ingredients, making it an excellent addition to an array of dishes.

Another advantage of making damson jelly is that it’s an effective way to use up extra plums. Whether I have a tree in my yard or if I happen to purchase more plums than I can consume before they spoil, making damson jelly is a smart way to preserve their flavor and enjoy it all year round.

Not only is damson jelly delicious, but it’s also beneficial to my health. Damson plums are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. They are low in calories and high in antioxidants, which can help to defend my cells from harm. (See other Damson Plum Dessert Recipes)

If you’re a fan of tangy and sweet spreads, then damson jelly is a must-try recipe. It’s an effortless and delicious way to enjoy the taste of damson plums, and it’s an excellent method of preserving their flavor for later. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or just starting out, damson jelly is a simple recipe that’s easy to include in your collection. So why wait?
